So Chris's birthday was on January 4th. It was on a sunday so I decided that I would just invite some of his friends over for some cake and ice cream and we could visit and play games. Well we got home from church and made some yummy dinner. Then we started on the cake. I really wish I had some pictures but we haven't had batteries in our camera since New Year's. So any way. I start on this German Chocolate Cake recipe that's in my mom's cookbook. We followed all of the directions and everything looked pretty good....until we stuck in the oven to cook. That's when the disaster started! I started smelling something burning, so I opened the oven and smoke started pouring out! But the cake wasn't burnt at all! It was still as liquid as soup in the pans. The smoke was coming from a small fire that had started on the bottom of the oven from the cake over flowing and dripping! We didn't know what to do. I had learned so many times what to do in case of an oven fire, but of course completely forgot in the heat of the moment and started freaking out! Chris kept cool and said I don't know, I don't know....blow. So he blew on the fire and put it out. I felt really silly. We got the alarms to quit and everything but we didn't know what to do with the liquid cakes that were in our oven still dripping and overflowing onto the bottom of the oven. We decided to leave them in a little longer, but soon learned our mistake when another fire in the bottom of the oven started, this one being a little bigger! I finally remembered that baking soda was supposed to do something like extinguish fires so I grabbed the box and dumped in the oven. It worked....left a big mess....but it worked. The fire alarms were going off again and it was just about time for all of Chris's friends to be arriving. We opened the door to let the smoke out. Just then Chris's friends were here. Our house smelt like smoke and we had no cake to serve for Chris's birthday. We had a good visit with some of our friends though and we got a good laugh. Sorry Chris, for your birthday disaster.
We did get to go to dinner and a movie on Friday night to celebrate his birthday. That was fun, we saw Valkyre and we both really enjoyed it.
In spite of everything, I hope he had a good day and knows how much I truly love him and appreciate him. He is my best friend and the love of my life. Happy Birthday Sweetheart!
